Bad Baby Diaper Rash from antibiotics and Diarreha

My baby is 20 months old and has a horrible antibiotic rash. Would it be good to mix desitin, nystatin, and some hydrocortizone cream together and make a paste to put on his butt, because it is getting worse by just mixing desitin and nystatin together.

Laurie,

My cure all for diaper rashes for my kids whether from food allergies, drug allergies, heat rash, etc... was corn starch.  Take corn starch and mix with warm water to a paste consistancy.  Pat onto the skin where it is rashed and let dry.  Keep repeating until the rash is gone.  Corn starch is soothing to the skin with no irritants and yet allows the skin to heal.

Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

We actually like A&D Ointment MUCH better than Desitin. I switched to A&D years ago; my daughter would get big, oozing open sores in her diaper area and up onto her back (turns out she was sensitive to the brand of diapers) and Desitin just wasn't cutting it.

It sounds like you've got a major problem going on though, so I don't know if you want to try something new or not. Have you also considered letting the area be exposed to air if at all possible? If you don't want to let the baby be naked (as you'll end up having to get your carpets cleaned) then you might go with a saggy cloth diaper (just for now) because it will allow air to get in there - air will help clear it up, it's the trapped moisture which keeps feeding the rash (that's why the cornstarch works, it'll help dry it up).

I have mixed desitn and nystatin and it helped my baby.

I always used a little salt in the bath water, no enough to burn her, but to help dry it out when it first starts, and also to let her go without a diaper "to air out" when you can. hope this helps

It sounds like the rash is a yeast infection.  Just like when women take antibiotics we get yeast infections babies can get this on there bottoms.  The best product for this is Lotrimin A/F an anit fungal that is also for athletes feet.  I know it sounds weird but it works amazingly only after a few applications.  Make sure the babies bottom is dry and let it air out as much as possible.
