Backpacking in New Zealand

I was there 11 years ago so things may be a bit different today, but as far as I know you can't go on one continuous one month walk anywhere in New Zealand. The best thing I can think of is going for a few walks in the southern part of the southern island: I recommend the Milford track (4 days), Dusky track (8-9 days), routeburn (4 days) and there are many others in that area.

Check out other possibilities in the Department of Conservation website, it seems to be as helpful online as these guys are in real life. It's a very easy country to travel in, I'm sure you'll have fun.

 Well, there isn't anything like that, but it's not really hard to make one.

NZ is the capital of tracks, and as one, there is tracks anywhere, the longest one I heard about is about two weeks in the beautiful bushes of the Fiordland, and is assembled from 3 different tracks, while two of them are "great walks" (Great Walk is 1 of 9 chosen of greatest walks in NZ, don't take that as a guarantee for enjoyment, and all of them are constructed to be as easy to walk as possible, also, very crowdy in the high season).

But if you won't mind to do little brakes in your trip, than your possibilities will get much wider, but anyway, it's really not hard to plan a walking track for a month, and I suggest you to get there and find what suits you best.

Well I don't have an answer for you, but if there isn't a trail like this, it's about time for the Kiwis to make one !

a good tip for your plan, is to be season wise - start walking between mid December to mid January to enjoy the "good" weather.

and ofcourse, don't forget to eat "Tip Top" icecream.

There's plenty of backpacking to be found up in the Bay of Islands, you could go hiking out to Cape Brett (couple day walk), then just make your way up north towards Cape Reinga. You'd probably have to walk on roads though, at least for some part.

You can get as adventurous as you like in the South Island, just get a good map, tell someone when you should be back, and head off.
