Backpack loops

I've just bought myself a backpack, and wanted to ask the salesman but forgot. What job do the 2 loops in the bottom fulfill?

They can be used to tie your second pair of shoes or boots so that they can air out. Also something like a sleeping bag which is too bulky to be packed in your knapsack and yet tied to your knapsack so that all your belongings are together.

I guess its for connecting stuff which will not get in to your backpack like  an ice axe or a shovel.

well those two loops are definately for sleeping bags and such... but I guess you can make some other use if you don't have to carry a sleeping bag... could use it for some rolled up blanket...

Thanks, I found out these loops are made for Ice-Axes. you thread the axe inside (Pick up), and than turn it upside down. Then, you should attach its shaft to the backpack with another small size variable loop.
