My baby sucks his thumb to fall asleep. Is this okay?

I think it is ok.  It has been going on since time began, and I don't think much harm can come of it.  Perhaps the less we interupt the process, the quicker they naturally give it up also.  It is a way to comfort his or her self.  I think being made to not put your own thumb in your own mouth is more of a trauma than anything that thumb sucking can cause.

Smile, it's contagious!

Carol --- I once had a sister that sucked two fingers and another that sucked their thumb. All three digits became deformed as a direct result.

With my own children every time I saw them put their thumb in mouth I would remove it  starting from the time they first came home from  hospital.  As a result none of them sucked their thumb and did not suffer any trauma. The catch is not to make a big deal of it.  Just say nothing.

It's really a choice you have to make based on how you feel about seeing a  5  y/o with thumb in mouth, deformed fingers, bucked teeth,  or all three. ----- Citrine1

  Live ,laugh,love,

I gave all my kids pacifiers since I read that they cause less damage to their teeth then their thumbs...none of them had teeth trouble.....but if he will not take a pacifier I would not make a big issue out of it...his sleep and comfort are whats most important now to his overall health and yours
