BA with honours

a friend of mine wants to start PhD studies in Australia. He says they demand MA or BA with honours. what exaclty is "BA with honours"?

There are basically two levels for degrees in Australia.  The first one being 'Pass' level, which is basically you've just completed all requirements.  Honours (and there are often different honours levels) is earned by academic achievement.  Wiki Page

I'm not sure of the differences between a Bachelors of Arts in Australia vs other countries.  But I'm sure it's some sort of concentration in Liberal/Fine Arts studies.

"With honours" means a degree granted with special recognition of exceptionally high grades. "Cum laude" is another term for the same thing. 

The Australian university your friend is considering may have more specific requirements for "with honours," so I'd suggest he/she ask them what they require.
