I was charged approx 8 hours labor or 268.50 ...

I was charged approx 8 hours labor or 268.50 dollars for replacement of the oil pan gasket, the oil pan, all in one oil dye oil and filter change. I was told by someone at the place who holds the repair coverage on the vehicle that the job should have been billed at 2.2 hours as per the Chilton manual. How do I go about addressing this with the dealer who repaired my vehicle?

Conservation: Paying more and getting less.

$268.50 isn't out out of line for replacing an oil pan gasket. Most dealers and national chains are charging $90.00 an hour or more.

I think they took you for a ride. To chance the oil pan gasket all you do is go under the car, drain the pan, remove about 8 bolts and the pan comes off. VERY SIMPLE! Take a razor blade and scrape off the old gasket seal, put in the new gasket, seal it, bolt it.. YOUR DONE. Fill the car up with oil and be on your way. HOW WOULD IT TAKE THEM 8 HOURS>? They are probably charging you for their 3 hour lunch break, as well as the hour it took them to fix it. It is very pathetic how car repairmen think that they can take advantage of unsuspecting people and get away with it. This is fraud and theft. Talk to your local state attorneys office. Talk to other mechanics..once you tell them what these mechanics did - they may want to help you by calling this other mechanic and letting them know that they know what they did.
