They are quite similar, but the main differences are that the South Beach diet makes a distinction between good fats and bad fats (forbids the latter and allows the former) and that the South Beach diet allows some carbohydrates - those with low glycemic index.

Differences
Fats: The most obvious difference between the two plans is the advice concerning fat in the diet.South Beach advises minimizing saturated fat such as not eating butter or the dark meat of poultry. The oils Agatston recommends (olive and canola) have a lot of monounsaturated fat. He also emphasizes getting adequate Omega-3 fatty acids. Agatston doesn’t mention Omega-6 fatty acids, and is vague on polyunsaturated fats as a class, but seems to say they are good.
Atkins (using the most recent book), advises eating a variety of fats. Omega 3s and 6s are recommended to be balanced, which means that many oils that are primarily Omega-6, such as corn oil, should be avoided. Saturated fats such as butter are (famously) allowed in greater amounts than South Beach, but Omega-3s and monounsaturates are emphasized.
Both hate trans fats (as well they should).

Counting carb grams vs. carb portions: The way carbohydrate is accounted for is different in the two diets. Atkins requires counting all carbohydrate that is digestible; mostly this means carbohydrate that isn’t fiber. Daily carb intake is accounted for by counting every gram eaten.
South Beach does not limit non-starchy vegetables. Other sources of carbohydrate are accounted for by the size and number of portions. Most people would probably find this is simpler than gram counting.

The Atkins Diet is also a low carbs, high protein diet. It was invented by Dr. Robert Atkins in the early 70s. The South Beach Diet was conceived having as a departure point the Atkins diet, but essentially improved.
Short survey of South Beach Diet vs Atkins Diet

    * Both diets work on the notion that weight gain is caused by the way the body reacts to carbs, particularly processed carbs (bread, potatoes, pasta), and not by fat intake or food portions.
    * Both diets have the disadvantage of not being proven long term effective, moreover, the American Heart Association's most serious claim against diets such as Atkins and South Beach is that, on the long run, they may increase the number of potential health risks such as osteoporosis, stroke, coronary heart disease, kidney stones, liver disorders and diabetes.
    * In South Beach Diet Phase 1, the basic principle is the same as in Atkins: carbs intake restriction. This lowers insulin levels and makes the body produce ketones, which also have the effect of suppressing appetite. The two diets share similarities up to a point: the carbs lowering is not as drastic in South Beach Diet. Dr. Agatston states that the carbs level should be kept at a safe level by complex carbs consumption, so that ketosis and its unpleasant side effects are avoided (dizziness, nausea, headaches, bad breath and faintness).
    * Both diets involve gradual re-introduction of some carbs after a couple of weeks, thus providing a maintenance program, with the carbs intake much lower than the customary one.

Hope it helps

They are quite similar but over time I don't think either of those diets have been successful for long-term weight loss. However there are real signs that the Acai Berry is proving to be more than just a fad and has been shown to have excellent success rates for those wanting to lose weight.

Atkins diet has been around for a long long time. It's been proven to be successful.
