Assistance with neighbor

I live in South Carolina. I have an elderly neighbor who is still driving and lives alone with no apparent family support. In addition, she is a heavy smoker and has already had one fire in her unit. (which is below me). How can I protect her and the community. Clearly, she is suffering from some kind of mental deficiency such as dementia or Alzheimer's.

You should not take this on personally. You should contact your local welfare or social services office. They have the people and experience. Do this soon before she harms herself or causes damage to others.

Try contacting your local Department of Social Services adult services department and see if they can send a social worker to check on her and her living situation they can find out if she has any family support in the area and if not they maybe able to help her.

The department of health and human services should help and get an evaluation and then they will decide what to do.   I guess all the neighbors can get together and keep watch on her.  Hope she has a smoke detector.  Good Luck
