Obama's Frightening Insensitivity Following Shooting A bad week for Democrats compounded by an awful moment for Barack Obama. By ROBERT A. GEORGE
President Obama didn't wait long after Tuesday's devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.
After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.
But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?
Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That's the least that should occur.
Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before. That would have prevented any sort of jarring emotional switch at the event.
Did the president's team not realize what sort of image they were presenting to the country at this moment? The disconnect between what Americans at home knew had been going on -- and the initial words coming out of their president's mouth was jolting, if not disturbing.
It must have been disappointing for many politically aware Democrats, still reeling from the election two days before. The New Jersey gubernatorial vote had already demonstrated that the president and his political team couldn't produce a winning outcome in a state very friendly to Democrats (and where the president won by 15 points one year ago). And now this? Congressional Democrats must wonder if a White House that has burdened them with a too-heavy policy agenda over the last year has a strong enough political operation to help push that agenda through.
If the president's communications apparatus can't inform -- and protect -- their boss during tense moments when the country needs to see a focused commander-in-chief and a compassionate head of state, it has disastrous consequences for that president's party and supporters.
All the president's men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday. And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.
Capt. Sir., I am sorry but my blood is still boiling over what had happened at Fort Hood, this was something that was just waiting to go, and the way it is being handled is just as expected. So no shocker there, just more anger. GOD Bless the fallen Troops. Semper fi Gypsey
The fact that the shooter was an Islamic radical seems to have not made much of an impression on our Christian-Muslim world leader. That in itself may be why he chose to make only a light mention of it. That plus the fact that he has never served his country in uniform and has no understanding of the brotherhood developed by those who have. His disdain for the military has been shown from the very start with his remarks against what he has called the unnecessary war. I can only wonder if the eyes of America are open enough to see that he is not what they thought when they voted last year and change that vote in 2012. It seems that he is happy with the House vote on his healthcare proposed bill but it still has to get through the Senate.
I saw a news banner that stated - "George W. Bush and Laura Bush secretly visited the soldiers at Fort Hood - Friday night".
Obama is a Jughead, a community organizer that only knows how to AGITATE people.
Obama does a good job at Agitating - especially with his MUSLIM background - and no mention of the Killing rampage was perpetrated by a radical MUSLIM extremist - who has been supported by the US taxpayers - and will be executed by the US taxpayers.
"WE WILL NEVER FORGET" -
The Obamas attempting to make 9-11-2009 - a DAY of Celebration -
did not sit well with REAL Americans -
nor the fact that Nemazullah ZAZI - a radical MUSLIM had another TERRORIST ATTACK planned for 9-11-2009.
Considering their own statements - against Americans - and against America, I know the Obamas were gravely disappointed.
I believe a lot more will come out about the shooting at Fort Hood, if it don't get covered up!
captain idiot, you right wingers are a disgrace to our country. instead of morning our fallen soldiers you wackos are trying to make a political issue out of this. its no wonder your tea bagger right wing extremist candidate was rejetced in the republican district in new york. independents will never except your insane hate and lies.
meow, whats your conspiracy theory? maybe try obama and the shooter were childhood friends in kenya. both were born there and as kids plotted this. im sure beck and the drug addict limbaugh have come up with something close to that. fox news can keep reporting it on their right wing opinion station.
fina, you definitely are in need of help. you far right religious extremists will be the next news story of some nut shooting a bunch of people.
Frogbutt; There is a time for everything...Now is the time for attacking those who will kill us if they can do so...We mourn as we fight so that those who have fallen will not have died in vain................. ......................But then I do not expect that you will even understand that concept, let alone see that it is truth...Any true Patriot would and does feel that way............................. ...............................Your stupid, disconnected reference to politics and the race in New York is typical of your idiotic thinking...This is not politics, Frogbutt, it is a fight for the survivial of a way of life that has been responsible for the greatest nation and society in the history of mankind; and you can't even see it!!
