Asking for more monthly allowance

My parents are helping me out a bit while I'm in school because I am only working part-time at a coffee shop. I have a really heavy academic work-load and am working less and less hours at the coffee shop. My parents are being really generous by giving me a monthly allowance, and I feel really bad asking them for more. I feel like I am too old to be asking them for money. What should I do?

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

Very understandable.  However in order to solve a problem a dialogue is required.  You are not lieing or cheating all you need is a raise.  Describe your situation: You appreciate very much (truely and honestly !) their generousity and you feel bad to ask it (as a matured person) but the academic work-loads and assignments don't leave you enough time to make some money (and I can guess you are under paid as well).....  will it be possible to work together a solusion ?  that can be either a raise or some kind of loan (that you'll have to return later own).... or find even some more creative solution (that I can't work out right now).  Trust and openess is required for good communications.  Don't be shy, you have a real problem.... It's money you really need and for possitive purposes... don't hesitate talk to them.... My intuition says they'll gladly say yes.....
Happy New-Year.

You have to graduate, and you need the time, so what can you do...

Draw a contract with them, make it an official loan, try to work extra shifts during breaks, and of course make sure they understand you will return the money (in installments, don't get into another debt to repay an old one) when you graduate.

Always look your best because you never know who you're going to meet.

I know exactly what you are feeling. While it sucks having to ask your parents for help, you need to remember that your financial situation is only temporary. You are studying in college so that you can get a well-paying job. I believe your parents see this; and for this reason, they are willing to give you a monthly allowance. If it makes you feel better, try writing down every purchase you make for a week and see if there is a way to cut back on your expenses. If you can find ways to do that, you may not have to ask your parents for more money. But if you cannot find ways to cut back anymore, remember that it's only a temporary situation and if you can, suggest that you pay your parents back when you finish school and have a full-time well-paying job. Good luck!

Dear Anthrogal,

Suggest a loan.  I would make this a formal promissory note with a due date and an interest rate.  You could commit to return the monies in installments.

This should work.

You could always try a personal/student loan. There are several financial agencies who provide this type of loan where you can start to gradual pay after you graduate.

You also have an option of student credit cards There are cards whose payment schemes are suited for college students.

Goodluck and hope this helps!
