Soap can break down the patina layer on your cast iron so you should only use hot water. Regular cleaning of your cast iron includes a rinse and softly scour in hot water, using something soft like a plastic spoon dislodge any stuck on peices. Never soak in water as this makes rust, then re-season your pan, then use either crisco or another solid oil to season it.

hi, i clean my cast iron pans with hot water, but i do add one drop of ivory dish soap to it.i always use olive oil to smear around all over the pan after i wipe it dry.the olive oil seems to work best.i use olive oil for almost everything. from pans to my privite bottle for my body. i'm italian, so go figure. thats how i was taught to take care of everything:)
