Arthur Clarke's "The City and the Stars" - concept of god

For all those of you who have read Arthur Clarke's "The City and the Stars", can you think of the "pure intellect" at the end of the book? Could Clarke (unintentionally) have pointed to what could probably be a scientific, resonable concept of god as an exisitng and reasonable entity?

A concept is scientific because it is based on reason which is founded on logic. The idea of any divinity or mystical entity can never rest on reason-logic.

This is because it is without any evidence or logical iference therefore is arbitrary.

This means that one cannot even debate whether a divinity exists or not, it is simply error.

That is why faith is required. A scientific "reasonable concept of God" is not possible.

Faith opposes reason, they do not compliment each other as the Pope claims. In fact Martin Luther [a vehement anti-Semite] disagrees with him.

I will have to paraphrase the question then: does the "pure intellect" described in Clarke's book possess the features attributed to the (non-scientific) concept named god?

PS: What was the remark about Martin Luther meant to convey?

In Judaism attributing limits to God, which is what is done when "describing" Him is rejected. Even the word G-d is not written.

In other religions where God is considered omiscient then it may well - although I have no idea what Clarke's idea

I am guessing Clarke uses the term Pure Intellect as a name for a certain entity, possibly of strong AI, an all encompassing intelligence. We cannot begin to imagine what such an entity would think of, or do. Clarke himself is quoted as saying: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Ray Kurzweil, an inventor and expert in cutting edge technological trends, proposes that such an entity is not only possible, but inevitable.

About your question, the comparison to God is unavoidable when one speaks of all powerful entities. We can't help it. Clarke, much like yourself, knew what his term "sounds" like. Many science fiction writers use this effect in their stories. Read Assimov's "The Last Question" for the best last line in science fiction history, and as an added example of my point.
