Approaching DIY companies

We have a great new tool for home improvement and DIY. we are looking for distribution and sales channels and would like to approach DIY retailers. how do we do that? who should we approach? anybody has experience with buisness development in this domain?

First, have you tested it with real home owners and diy experts.  Before you even approach retailers and distributors, you should be making some buzz for your product.  Create videos and post on YouTube on how great it works.  Have friends, family and strangers to test it out and give you honest critiques.  Get people to start talking about your product before you get to the retailers. 

Then I would first make sure that you have a put together a professional business plan, a proposal, and a clear and consice presentation on your products's benefits, costs, suggested retail price.

It depends upon if you have a Patent on the tool. If you don't have rights to sell the item and can't prove it, they wont even consider it. Maybe if you contact someone who does patent attorney work.
