Caring for others like thyself.

 Truth, Justice~the American way.

God is great, a Smilebeer is good, People are crazy!

A:

Angie;

For years after my husband's suicide, i took Valium on a PRN (as needed basis).  My physician had no problem in prescribing.  My doctor retired, and the attitude was as you say, "addiction".  Anxiety is a real illness.  Panic disorders being the same.  They tried to put me on XANAX and it was an absolute nightmare.  I went through all the mental regime and found a physician that was caring, understood the severity and now prescribes VALIUM on a PRN basis.  I receive 120 tablet of 5 mg., and I know I have it - but the last time I had it filled was 4 months ago!  I was allowed 5 mg, four times daily, maximum.  I do not find this as addiction or abuse of the RX.

It seems to go back to the past times (1960's) or thereabout, when housewives were taking this (much the same as Crack and Cocaine users) do now.  it was considered "recreation".  I know this has been implanted in the minds of some physicians.

You can wean off the drug; and if you are having that much trouble obtaining a RX, that would seem to be your only option.

I do not understand there thinking on this matter, much as I do not get the thoughts behind true PAIN MANAGEMENT.  It is looked upon so negatively.  If anyone has ever had true chronic pain, being hit by a 175,000. lb loaded tanker truck, as a pedestrian, they may understand.  PAIN MANAGEMENT drugs give you no high; only are supportive in reducing the levels to those that can be coped with and you get no rush, excitement of taking them but they do provide some quality of life in that you can take care of ironing, dishwashing and lighter things in your own home.  I would never drive while taking these drugs.

The thinking of the AMA needs to be reversed.

Therefore, the only thing I would suggest is if you ask about XANAX, it may work for you......  But I will keep my 5 mg tablets, for a needed occasion and will not abuse anything. In prescribing, please remember
LESS is BEST.

I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do.

Laughing Dear 94meetze, Thank you so much for responding to me. I'm sorry to hear that you too suffer from the physical and mental crippling disorder of anxiety. It does however give you the insight that many others (including health care professionals) don't have. But I guess "insight" doesn't help you very much when you're climbing walls while sitting in a chair. I guess age is against us. Valium was a very popular and much prescribed drug of the 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Then all of a sudden it became totally taboo! Xanax then became the popular drug of the 80's, even though it's a benzodiazepine also with all of the same potential addictive characteristics of valium. Prozac and paxil then became the popular drug of the 90's with some pretty disastrous and deadly results. Now it seems that as soon as a patient tells a Dr. or psychiatrist that they suffer from any of the many types or forms of anxiety, their answer is automatically "you need an antidepressant". Antidepressant use has gone up approximately 83% since 1998!, even involving our teenagers. Antidepressant use is so popular now that it is dangerously present in our water supply (along with estrogen) and cannot be filtered out! It's become an environmental nightmare! I read a book once and one of the lines in it was "the answer is that there is no answer". I hope that's not true, but for now it appears that it is. Anyway 94meetze, I wish you all the best always, and please know that I completely understand how you suffer and the ongoing frustration that you experience when you attempt to seek help for your very real and debilitating problem. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. All the best, and good take good care.  Love, Luck and Laughter, Angie.

Angie;

It was a delight to hear from you today and  KNEW there was someone else out there that was suffering as I do.  You are correct:  mention anxiety/panic attacks and physicians flip out.  If you are hospitalized (as I have been 9 times in the last year), they immediately called in a phychiatrist.  The last 2 told me I had more comon sense, more going on for me in a positive way, and was more sane than they.  THEY DO NOT SLEEP NIGHTS!  One was really angry they called him at 10:30 pm (waking me up) to have a consultation.  And what kind of a consult was that after 10 mg of Ambien!  In any event he told me if I ever needed him, here was his business card.  Case closed.  In Florida, they have invoked what is called the "BAKER ACT". If you do say not yes sir and no sir; then you have a Mental Disorder.  When I am all of a sudden  offered a PILL, I ask what for, by whom and why. If they do not answer the question, my doctor has not told me of anything new, I REFUSE.  I am a firm advocate for, as I said before, LESS IS BEST.

I would not take Cymbalta, Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Lyrica, Neurotin or any of these classes of drugs.  Would refuse the prescription.

Have you tried an "old school doctor"?  I find them much more a listener and HEARING what you have to say.

You combine Hypothyrodism, Hypertension and Anxiety, have you any idea of what that creates?  Also Blood
Clots times 3 and a PE?  Overdosed on Coumadin by a physician who had me bleeding out at >14 INR and giving me FFP and Vitamin K for 10 days to stop the oozing of Blood.  Also a Hematuria of 4+. Stayed 10 days in the hospital; my crit and gloin dropped so loww, I have iron infusions for 4 months!  My crit was 5.  Wonder I did not stroke out  They called a team in the middle of the night to scope me (colonoscopy and EGD),and he nearly killed me.  That has been my struggle for the past year.  FL DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH has investigated, went to Prosecution/General Counsel and now an Administrative complaint.  His license is at stake!  At least he will not hurt anyone else.  When I checked his license (which I was tardy in doing this, he had the following violation:  DRUNK, DISORDERLY CONDUCT and DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!

NOW WHAT WOULD MAKE ME ANXIOUS i WONDER!!?!?!?! I have lost over 65# now and gone from a size 14 to a size 6.  I weighed 109 this morning!  Guess I would be dead with a stroke/hypertension if I weighed 175 #.

It seems the whole of the U.S. has gone into a spiriling nightware: from Healthcare Reform,Environmental issues, unemployment and the economy in general.  Most people do not want much; just to work, have a roof over their heads and feed their families.

Of course, there is always the abusers that make it bad for the ones that are truthful in their needs.

PLEASE, let me hear from you again and what is happening. I KNOW from where you are coming; but would be interested in where you go now. Do you live near a respectable LARGE hospital.  I am threaening to be "on vacation" in the N.C. mountains and slip on into DUKE or BOWMAN GRAY where they have real interest in folks and try their best to resolve the issues.

Indeed, I think you are correct:  "the answer is there is no answer"!

You are also in my thoughts and prayers for some help and PEACE.  May many Angel hugs, love, SUPERIOR HELP, and the Grace of God sustain you.
