Angie;
For years after my husband's suicide, i took Valium on a PRN (as needed basis). My physician had no problem in prescribing. My doctor retired, and the attitude was as you say, "addiction". Anxiety is a real illness. Panic disorders being the same. They tried to put me on XANAX and it was an absolute nightmare. I went through all the mental regime and found a physician that was caring, understood the severity and now prescribes VALIUM on a PRN basis. I receive 120 tablet of 5 mg., and I know I have it - but the last time I had it filled was 4 months ago! I was allowed 5 mg, four times daily, maximum. I do not find this as addiction or abuse of the RX.
It seems to go back to the past times (1960's) or thereabout, when housewives were taking this (much the same as Crack and Cocaine users) do now. it was considered "recreation". I know this has been implanted in the minds of some physicians.
You can wean off the drug; and if you are having that much trouble obtaining a RX, that would seem to be your only option.
I do not understand there thinking on this matter, much as I do not get the thoughts behind true PAIN MANAGEMENT. It is looked upon so negatively. If anyone has ever had true chronic pain, being hit by a 175,000. lb loaded tanker truck, as a pedestrian, they may understand. PAIN MANAGEMENT drugs give you no high; only are supportive in reducing the levels to those that can be coped with and you get no rush, excitement of taking them but they do provide some quality of life in that you can take care of ironing, dishwashing and lighter things in your own home. I would never drive while taking these drugs.
The thinking of the AMA needs to be reversed.
Therefore, the only thing I would suggest is if you ask about XANAX, it may work for you...... But I will keep my 5 mg tablets, for a needed occasion and will not abuse anything. In prescribing, please remember
LESS is BEST.
I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do.
