Ants in Eggplants?

my neighbor's eggplant was starting such a nice blossom, and then she noticed that it was getting chewed up, she opened it up a little and discovered many tiny red ants, is this a common pest for eggplants?

Think of the solution, not the problem.

Ants, not so much.  Aphids, on the other hand, love eggplant.  And aphids are an ant's favorite prey, so having one tends to attract the other.  Check for tiny green bugs, often smaller than the ants, in the blossoms or on the undersides of leaves.  If you find them, try hitting any affected area with a weak soap solution.  Just a tablespoon of Dawn in the bottom of an old Windex bottle full of water will be enough.  It'll smother both ants and aphids without harming the plant.  For next season, you can try a companion planting trick: plant chives, onions, garlic, or anything in the allium family near your eggplant to ward off both aphids and ants.

While there are certainly many joys to gardening in the shade (and I have a number of books about it on my shelves) it seems to me that sun gardening is more dynamic, with a wider palette to your garden design and you'll look for ways to reintroduce them.
