A very good one for free is AVG free. Get it at http://free.grisoft.com/, also I add antispyware for free. My choice is spybot, you can get it, or others at, http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/default.aspx, In the search field just type in antispyware and several choices come up. On a side note, Windows market place has quite a few free downloads that can prove very helpful in many different formats. Hope this helps and good luck.

Just don't forget that free doesn't necessarily mean good.  I agree that AVG is probably a good free choice, but the fact that they sell a better version means that they know that the free version is limited.

After all, who would be stupid enough to make a major investment in software development, then give it away.

Personally, I can't believe that people aren't willing to pay a little to protect their investment in their computer and all the files they put on it.

Would you ask for the best FREE medicine, if you're dying of cancer?

Anyway, it's up to you.  I don't work for any software company, but I have an informational web site on computer and internet security at...

http://confidential-transactions.com

There's a section with some recommendations of commercial products that will be far superior to any free software.

i have just forgotten what I had forgotten

Sorry CWHALEY, but you are wrong

Free versions often are as good as the paid version, just good marketing strategy, give the free version to the private user and charge the professional for the "full" version.

They are correct in their marketing strategy, at least 1000 people have bought AVG on my recommendation, and those for home use continue to install the free version.

This is a better antivirus than the market leaders, on test I have found AVG to find viruses quicker than both Norton and MCAFEE and it doesent kill the computer performance like they do.

No question. The free version is excelent, just short of a few dinky if unimportant extras that come with the paid version.

The paid version is for professional use, and the free for personal use.

Make your choice.

(no affiliation wih AVG, just a smart choice for me)
