Amps for acoustic/electric guitars

I have an acoustic electric guitar and I am wanting to purchase an amp for it.  Do I have to buy an acoustic amp or can I buy an electric amp for it?  What is the difference and what do you suggest?

I suggest purchasing an amp made for acoustic aplications.  I've played in bands for years and always had problems when playing my acoustic through amplifiers.  There are many acoustic amps made to today so I really couldn't recommend any brand.  I have a Taylor acoustic-electric and I find that if you plug your guitar through a processor and then record and/or play 'stereo-out' you'll get a huge sound.  I especially use this when recording my acoustic pieces.  Hope this was helpful!

Same suggestion here as previous. Get a amp made for acoustic. Fender has one model I don't remember its name.

Depending on the acoustic pickup you have, make sure you have a good preamp as well. That will actually define your guitar tone's character.

Are you just starting out?   I really don't see a difference in amps.  An amp is an amp.  The acoustic guitar is going to play through the pick up and unless you are professional,  which I seriously doubt because of your question,  you won't be able to tell the difference.  Have fun and be patient,  it took me a long time to get good enough to like my "sound"  it will take a while.

There is a MAJOR difference in amps....don't believe what you 'hear'. I've been playing for many years, many gigs, and there is definitely a difference. Buy an acoustic amp. Mike
