Amp buzzing when using distortion

I have a 10 years old 15W Peavey amplifier which hasn't been in use for about 3 years. Recently I resumed playing the guitar. When I'm playing it clean (with no effects) the sound is Ok, but everytime I use the integrated distortion there is an annoying buzz in the background. What could be the cause for that ? is there any way to fix it by myself?

Hi.

Can you check for a buzz on other amps using your guitar?

Do you get the buzzing sound when using a humbucker pickup (if you got one)?

If so, it could be the grounding on your amp. check the electric cable for 3 pins and make sure they are in place.

also you may want to check the rig on different locations - it could be some sort of electric noise from a monitor\lamp that buzz.

(the buzz exist on the clean mode as well, you just don't hear it. when you turn on the distortion it amplify the sound including the buzz)

5 thumbs up

try this :

1. unplug the cable from your guitar

2. apply the distortion

3. if the noise stopped, it's you'r guitar fault

4. if it still noising, pull the guitar-cable out of the amp.

5. if the noise stopped, it's you'r cable fault

6. if it still noising, check the power cord, it may have faulty ground connector
