I'm not an American but as a Canuck here's my reasoning. First of all it has to do with popularity, American football is in the media much more than soccer. With that comes the enormous amount of money that goes into the sport and thus player contracts. It's one of the glamour sports here in North America. Soccer while played alot by kids and teens is only in the media every 4 years for the World Cup or if something scandalous is going on ie the Italian match fixing scandal. So to me it's just what you grow up with and are comfortable with. I enjoy both and find it funny that fans of both sports can't appreciate the skills and athleticism used in both sports, they're both great! What's the point in being a hater of the other sport?

Soccer is half a sport; it requires use of only half of the body.  Think about the most exciting plays you see in soccer.  These typically involve a diving save or an aerial kick.  These types of movements involve the full body, and therefore are more compelling to watch.

Football, on the other hand, requires use of the entire body.  There is nothing like the rush of running into another person at full speed.  This is an experience that others shun for fear alone.  This is the problem.  Soccer is a much safer sport.  Indeed, its players often feign injury, but less often are actually seriously injured.  This melodramatic acting and whining, btw, is pathetic.  In football, a player is motivated not to show pain or injury.  This speaks to the more honorable side of man.

I have taken the approach in comparing soccer to football, which doesn't exactly cover the general theme of your question.  I hope, however, to have highlighted some reasons why soccer is simply an insufficient practice for many Americans.

I xould like to add a few commentaries to the already accurate answers given here.

I'm french, and I used to be a rugby player before I moved to the states and played football there as a linebacker.

First of all, soccer is not as shiny a sport as football is. In a 90 minutes game, you can hope to see 3 or 4 great moves at best which makes it quite boring for an audience used not only to great catches, TDs but also dunks in Basketball for instance.

To correct something said by a previous contributor, soccer injuries are more common than one might think. Most of these injuries hurt the lower part of the body and create very important damages since the blows mainly come from behind.

Rugby and Foot players are injuried quite often, but that is no big deal. Soccer players suffer more dramatic injuries.
