if i ask for hot chips what would the waiter bring
To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.
A study of the multicultural nature of UK cuisine suggests that fish and chips was influenced by immigrants 150 years ago.

Well, not exactly the same. Traditional chips are thicker, more like America's Steak Fries. Plus, traditionally, they are cooked in animal fat, rather than vegetable oil. But, basically, they are deep-fried potatoes.
Chips are what brits call french fries - but they will differ in shape and size in every restaurant.
If you ask for hot chips, you'll get the English chips which are fat. If you ask for French Fries, you get the skinny ones. No one ever asks for hot chips though. It's only French Fries or chips.
