Well first Obama is not a socialist he is a Democrat. Second why is America allowing him to lead us? The answer is quit simple. Because the majority of voters preferred the Democratic platform over the Republican one in the 2008 elections. This means that the majority of American voters agree with Obama and the Democrats and conversely disagree with Republicans.
Third, there are many, many countries around the world who have currently various degrees of socialistic programs within their governments and they are far from being failed nations. Quite the opposite actually.
The Democrat Party of liberals has been attempting to socialize our great Nation for years. My Webster's defines that word to mean the transfer of industry, etc. from private to public or government ownership. For you who seem to not know socialism is an economic and political system aiming at public or governmant control and ownership of all means of production and services. If you cannot see that such countries as Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, and Laos are worse off than our Nation and only China is still doing okay. Other countries that have had socialistic goverments but have changed are Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia, Somali, Congo, Angola, Yeman, and Albania who were all so rich back then.
Define it how ever widely or narrowly you like. It doesn't change the fact that it is what the majority of Americans voted for in both 2006 and 2008.
Majority rules here in the USA and the majority wants the Dems in power. End of story.

It appears that Barack Obama was a member and collaborator with the Chicago New Party, an offshoot of the Democratic Socailists of America, an organization committed to “implement Socialist Rule in the United States and was established to counteract the influence of a Democratic Party that they viewed as too moderate and too centered.” This surfaced earlier in the summer, but was flatly denied by both the Democratic Socialists of America and the Obama campaign.
