Since you're in New York, I can help with this one.
Short answer: It depends. Different states and regionshave different requirements for certification of EMTs.
In New York, you have to take an EMT class before you can work on an ambulance, and that covers CPR, bleeding/shock control, splinting, spinal immobilization, airway control, etc. In New York, New York, you're more likely to have paramedics on board, and their training is significantly more involved. I would suggest consulting the New York State Department of Health Bureau of EMS website, http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/main.htm
