Alternative air transportation

Seventy years ago -- or least before the Hindenburg crash -- the dirigible (zeppelin or blimp) appeared to be a viable alternative to the airplane.  Are any alternatives to airplanes in development today?

Well, we are now facing the return of the Zeppelin. There are rumors about several manufacturers developing cargo zeppelins, while in Africa Zeppelins are already in use for searching after diamonds.

Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk - Saddam's nightmare

The F-117 has been used several times in war. Its first mission was during the United States invasion of Panama in 1989. During that invasion two F-117A Nighthawks dropped two bombs on Rio Hato airfield. During the Gulf War in 1991, the F-117A flew approximately 1300 sorties and scored direct hits on 1600 high-value targets in Iraq while flying 6905 combat flying hours. The F-117 comprised only 2.5 percent of the American aircraft in Iraq yet struck more than 40 percent of the strategic targets. "During their mission, the F-117A pilots delivered over 2,000 tons of precision-guided ordnance with a hit rate of better than 80 percent. Although the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing Provisional and its 42 stealth fighters represented just 2.5 percent of all allied fighter and attack aircraft in the Gulf, the F-117As were assigned against more than 31 percent of the strategic Iraqi military targets attacked during the first 24 hours of the air campaign." During the war, it performed rather poorly dropping smart bombs on military targets, achieving a success rate of only 40%. It was among the only U.S. or coalition aircraft to strike targets in downtown Baghdad. Among the aircraft the Nighthawk shared this distinction with were the F-16s which attacked Baghdad during daylight on 19 January 1991 during the "Package Q" mission - the largest single strike flown during the war. Since moving to Holloman AFB in 1992, the F-117A and the men and women of the 49th Fighter Wing have deployed to Southwest Asia more than once. On their first trip, the F-117s flew non-stop from Holloman to Kuwait, a flight of approximately 18.5 hours a record for single-seat fighters that stands today. It has since been used in Operation Allied Force in 1999, Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

The Chance Vought F4U Corsair

The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service in World War II and the Korean War (and in isolated local conflicts). Goodyear-built Corsairs were designated FG and Brewster-built aircraft F3A. The Corsair served in some air forces until the 1960s, following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942--1952). Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II. The U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio for every F4U shot down. The Corsair started life as the result of a U.S. Navy requirement for a carrier aircraft which could match the performance of the best land and carrier-based fighter planes. Designed in 1938 by Rex Beisel, the first prototype Corsair designated XF4U-1 first flew on 29 May 1940. When flown in 1940, the XF4U-1, powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, became the first U.S. single-engine production aircraft capable of 400 mph (640 km/h) in level flight. It was a remarkable achievement for Vought; compared to land-based counterparts, carrier aircraft are "overbuilt" and heavier, to withstand the extreme stress of deck landings.

QANTAS Airbus A380 landing at Adelaide...

This is the first A380 that QANTAS have received. It arrived at Sydney on Thursday and is not undergoing pilot training. It's apparently going to stop at all the large Airports in Australia. I was in an awesome spot and as you can see, it flew EXTREMELY low. It was MUCH bigger in real life as it does appear on the video. The A380 is a magnificent and beautiful aircraft.
