Alternate Dad Names?

We are the gay dads of an adorable 5 month old & are still struggling with what we want her to call us. Obviously one of us will be Dad, but what should she call the other? Father sounds too formal & Papa is already taken by one of her grandfathers. All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

Let her choose. anyway it´s a woman, she will "understand" your nature, won´t she? Isn´t that the reason both of you chose to "adopt" a girl? so you will never have to play the male role in front a BOY?

Those answers are horrible! and actually, not helpful at all.

This is what I think, I think that this problem will solve itself. I think that as new parents this is more about you then about a problem that will only arise in about a year's time and that you are trying to figure it out as a way to put yourself in that "daddy" (or dada or pappa or dad) roles. I think that as this becomes less new this problem will not be there anymore.

I called both my parents by their name till age 7, now I call them Mom and Dad, I know people who calls their parents " mommy and pappi" and people who calls their parents by their name, I have one friend who calls his parents "the old man and the bitch" Non of those parents anticipates that (especially not the last one, I'm sure) it just happens, kids and parents figure it out as they go along.

1 thumb up

I have several gay friends with children and here are some examples of how they are addressed by their kids:

dad and pop

dad and daddy j (for joe)

dad and dadda (pronounced like daddah, was supposed to be daddy, which never caught on with their son)

Per my friend's experience, they usually guided their kids to call them pet names, and the kids usually took that and altered it a little bit.

Good luck!

2 thumbs up

My son has two moms and two dads due to remarriage - he uses the hebrew names for mom and dad (ima and aba) for the stepparents - maybe you have a language to borrow from that makes sense for your family?

i would just have her call you guys daddy..to both of you. Whether you like it or not, you're both men. You shouldn't raise your children bias to sexual preference.
