Allowance for children

Should I give my three children different allowances? My youngest is 6 and then I have a 10 year old and a 13 year old. I know that my 6 year old does not need the same allowance as my 13 year old, but I am concerned about causing tension between my two oldest if they do not get the same amount. Is it fair to give the oldest more? I want to teach them how to manage money as well and am not sure how to do it. What is a reasonable amount to give them?

At each age there is greater responsibility for the growing child. Therefore it is only right that each gets a separate amount. Since it is based on age each child will be better able to accept the decision. It would be best to raise the allowance each time each child has a birthday.

Dear Florcita,

It would be fair to make the allowance proportional to their age.

Yes, it's fair for your children to recieve different allowances, just explain that as they get older, it can grow-maybe by offering a dollar/year old/week.

For instance your thirteen year old could recieve 13 dollars a week for her chores, and next year bump them each up a dollar.

Different ages can do different varieties of chores, the oldest obviously being able to complete more, and also at an older age, probably has more expensive taste.
