When Does the Alimony Stop?

When is your dad supposed to stop paying alimony? At what age are the kids supposed to take care of themselves and stop being dependent on their (divorced) parents?

Alimony (spousal support) is different, and in many cases completely separate from, child support. Alimony generally stops if the ex-spouse remarries or it can be proven that his/her financial situation has improved to some point that support is no long required. Child support, on the other hand, generally ceases when the child reaches adulthood, depending on what state you're in, usually at the age of 18.

Child support should continue until the children are in school.  Spousal support, on the other hand, should end when the spouse - usually the woman but not always - has had a period of time to adjust to their new circumstances.  If the mom didn't work during the marriage, for example, then once separated from her husband that must change.  A woman is just as capable as a man to earn a living and should not be dependant after a marriage has ended.  Women have worked too hard for equal rights and equal pay and equal opportunity that the laws should change too.  Support for an indefinite period of time or until the woman remarries is old school and assumes that a woman cannot take care of herself.  The law allows a time period where the spouse can get re-trained or re-educated so they can be self sufficient even if it is not at the same level of earnings that the other spouse makes.
