If the following system 5x+9y=3, 9x-5y=7 is to be solved using the addition method, by what constant should one of the equations be multiplied if the x terms are to drop out? -5, -8, 5, 40, 1/8

Hi Rosalind, ----------- Sorry but NONE of the answers is correct. If you want that the terms x will drop out you have to bring the two equation to the same value of x and have the opposite sigh (one + the other -). None of the answers is correct: The correct answers are: Either -9/5 (so the first equation will start with -9x..... ) or -5/9 (so the second equation will start with -5x). ---------- Best reagrds,
