Alcohol Withdrawal

EmbarassedI consume 1 liter (equal to six glasses) of white wine on a regular evening basis.  I recently quit cold turkey and for the next 6 days felt extremely depressed, edgy, headaches, and weak.  I only thought you could have withdrawal symptoms if you were drinking hard liquor, such as vodka, whiskey, etc. Was I having withdrawal symptoms?

Be Blessed.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (Love), I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vauneth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seekth not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is (Love) charity.

Sybil, yes you were going through withdrawal. Although you were drinking wine it was still alcohol. You also have to look at the alcohol content, how much alcohol did the liter contain? A liter is quite a lot. You may not have went through as tough of a withdrawal that you would have had with hard liquor, but you certainly had symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.---------Be Blessed

Yes, I agree with Tippy. Certainly, if you have conditioned your body to accept large quantities of ANYTHING (alcohol, nicotine, drugs, sugar) and then you cut your body off from that substance, cold turkey, your body WILL let you know how it feels about that - hence, withdrawal symptoms. Good luck with your endeavor, and good health.

Alcohol addiction is considered as potentially dangerous because withdrawal symptomscan range from a mild annoying to severe and even life-threatening.  This condition can be treated through an alcohol intervention which can help you become sober to alcohol.

Yes.  You don't say how long you consumed this wine.  You state you quit cold turkey.  Which is good, because it sounds like you might have quit before you became an alcoholic or addicted to it.  Which is good because addiction is harder to break and usually once addicted to any thing.  Always addicted.

NOTICE: By the time you have noticed this notice, you will have noticed that this notice is not worth noticing.

I agree with the above.  Yes, you were experiencing withdrawal.  It sounds to me like you might be an alcoholic already.  Have you gone back to drinking (yet)?  If you have, I'd suggest a visit (or more) to the nearest AA meetings, and hear how bad it might become.  With AA's help, you might be able to stop drinking for good.
