Afraid to buy roller blades for grandson

My 7 year old grandson asked for roller blades but I am afraid he will hurt himself. Is there a safer substitute available?

You will not always be there to keep him from getting a bump or a scratch, but you can provide protection and a few lessons if you can afford them.  Let the kid have some fun.  PS  Love him but please don't baby him "WHEN" he falls down.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

Yes, there is a good substitute, he can play chess or ride the roller blades on the computer.....  Now seriousely, roller blades are good fun, please let him enjoy it.... Provide him with all necessary safety devices and let him do it.... it's very good to gain sense of balace, coordination, eye-body contact, etc.....  Yes he will (sure) fall more than once.... that is part of the game....  he fell down when he learnt to walk.... and anyone who rides horses will tell you that he / she fell at least once..... That's not a good reason to avoid doing it.
Best regards,

I don't think you should worry about it. With the proper protective gear he should be fine. It's very important not to be overprotective of kids at young ages for it has an affect on them later in life. Perhaps get yourself a pair as well and then you'll be able to ride together.

My son is 6 and wanted skates as well. So I bought them and safety equipment.  Then we started out learning in the living room on the carpet to get use to the idea of rolling without the skates rolling out from under him. Then we moved to the hallway which is tiled, so its much more like concrete and he could hold onto the walls to secure his balance. Most people think, you let him skate in the house?  Well, houses can be cleaned and repaired cheaper than broken arms and bones which affect you the rest of your life.

He will hurt himself, but you can buy him the necessary protective clothes, and actually teach him how to minimize the hurt. I don't think you can sheild him forever. Maybe teaching him how to deal with the pain will be more helpful for his future.

Get him knee and wrist pads and a helmet because he will fall, he will get hurt, he will cry and he will learn to get back up on his feet and do it again and again.

Is it better to never try and never fail or to keep trying until you succeed? Encourage him but hold his hand and gradually let him take off and fly on the rollers so he may feel the intrinsic reward.
