You need to use an "ash" color, which will prevent the red tones. Look on the box of hair color, and if it says anything like "golden", "autumn", etc., then those will result in red tones. Try something like a "medium ash brown, light brown, dark blonde", just make sure it does not say "golden" and that it does say "ash".
