According to a book (Neuroscience, 2001, on p 447), the adrenalmedulla is, although part of the sympathetic nervous system, made up of preganglionic nerve fibers. Those have been adapted for enhancement of reactions to stress. The ordinary cells in sympathetic ganaglia are motor neurons , rather than, as the adrenal-medulla ones, releasers of catecholamines, which is an endocrine function.
