Adding laundry softener manualy

My washing machine doesn't use the Laundry softener I add in the designated compartment, so apperantly I'll add it manualy. The only problem is that I don't really know in what phase I should open the machine and add the softener.

Any ideas?

You should add the softener on the last time the machine is filled with water. Sit next to your machine and get to know it in order to get the perfect timing

My machine did the same thing. It was later that I found out that the drain (spout) for the softener was actually plugged with lint from years of use. See if you can remove the cover of the softener fill tub and either blow air or water through the spout that you see and see if it is just plugged. There are also little balls that you can buy at Wal Mart that go into the laundry when you start it and when the machine goes into the spin cycle, the force opens the plugged ball and deposits the softener for you. Enjoy the outdoors once again.
