New data shows 20% decline in online ads

PubMatic co-founder says social networks, entertainment sites were hit hardest PubMatic, a provider of ad-management services for publishers, on Tuesday released its AdPrice Index, which showed a steep month-over-month drop in online advertising in July. "Clearly, we're seeing the slowdown in the offline economy catching up in the online economy," said Rajeev Goel, co-founder and General Manager of PubMatic. PubMatic provides real-time ad network optimization so that publishers can manage the ads that appear on their site from multiple advertising networks. PubMatic serves billions of ad impressions provided by the more than 150 ad networks it works with. "The declines vary by vertical," said Rajeev. Across Pubmatic's network of 4,000 publishers, the drops are anywhere between 12 percent and 20 percent, depending on the vertical, he said. The verticals that were ... [ Read more ]

Andrew (Drew) Lipsher, a veteran media-industry executive and now a venture investor with Greycroft Partners, says ad money will follow online shows that can build an audience. When we caught up with him at the OnMedia conference in NYC, he had just raised some eyebrows by stating something during a panel session that was not obvious to everyone in the audience at the Mandarin Oriental conference room:The perceived economic value of online video and music content among a younger generation of consumers is "zero," Lipsher says. Later, he told Vator.tv that "you can't build an industry on something that's free." Not unless it is a subscription service supported by advertising, or show sponsorships, or some similar business model, Lipsher says.Spending on ... [ Read more ]

Small businesses typically haven't had access to the low-priced, last-minute advertising opportunities that media companies offer to their large buyers, according to Christina Tutone. To address that market, Tutone founded aditlast, which uses a proprietary online system to match buyers and sellers of this "remnant" advertising. BrightRoll rides video boom with HD pre-rolls

Back in 1999, it was a painful experience to watch online videos, since they played at 15 frames per second. Nine years later, young companies like BrightRoll are not only supporting video ad campaigns worth $100,000, they’re releasing online commercials in HD format! “We’re focused on helping video advertisers scale,” said BrightRoll CEO and founder Tod Sacerdoti, who came in for an interview and to show me his HD videos. “We wanted higher quality units.” Underscoring the surge in online video ads, a new study released Tuesday by Strategy Analytics showed that more than $1 billion was spent globally on video commercials. Video commercials are also expected to grow at an annual rate of nearly 50% over the next five ... [ Read more ]

Adify CEO Russ Fradin on ad networks and...

News that ESPN.com plans to start selling directly to its advertisers adds fuel to the debate over the merits of online ad networks and what kind of sites can most benefit from them. The huge sports site is among a growing list of big online publishers who are opting to either go it alone, or at the very least keep control over most of their ad inventory -- especially the chunk targeted at brand advertisers based on data about the Web site's own users. At the same time, big online media companies like AOL have been buying ad networks to get control of relationships with those same brand advertisers. So where do ad networks and ad technology platforms like Adify fit ... [ Read more ]
