I have been an American Express card holder for over 40 years, and use it frequently. Yesterday, for the first time, my a local business rejected it, saying, improper request". Expiration date is 9-12. Please advise ASAP

How embarrassing for you. The answer would be found with your card issuer, I'm uncertain how another Yedda user could possibly provide an answer for your credit denial.
There is an 800 customer service number on the back of the card.
