Asked about “Air Conditioner Service

I am being asked to pay a fee for an Air ...

I am being asked to pay a fee for an Air Conditioning tech to come evaluate my system (fan won't come on). I have looked at it myself but don't see anything wrong.

Is that normal for a tech to charge for coming out, even if I decide to not have anything done? It's probably worth it but it surprised me a little.

Have you checked for blown fuses?

Yes, unfortunately techs will charge just for coming out.

THAT WHICH DOESN'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.

Bull. Reality is, it will usually hurt like hell and leave you with a permanent limp.

Of course you will be charged to have it checked:  don't you expect to be paid for your time and effort ?   This isn't the tech's hobby or something he does on alternate Thursdays as a community service:  someone drives to your house, using his vehicle and gas, then expends his time, effort, tools, and training to figure out YOUR problem but he doesn't deserve to be paid for it unless you decide to have it fixed ?

Have you checked your air handler to see if a wire has lost contact. I called an ac tech  and he misled me, charged me over $400 and I found him attaching a loose wire in my air handler. OUCH!!!

As an owner of a air condition company, what people fail to understand is, i have to pay for insurance, workmens comp. medical ins. for my men and for my family and pay them a salary so that they can feed there family, gas and time wasted means nothing thats the leastof my expenenses, so do you get the picture now why you have to pay a services charge, Sorry to be so blunt.  I would also like to add beware because free estimate are not free.

its standard practise to be charged a travel fee plus an hourly rate. people tend to forget that service techs bring with them their entire shop of tools and equipment to determine the problem your having. some companies will refund the travel charge if you decide to have the problem repaired. remember they have to spend money and time coming to your house.

Unfortunately HVAC technicians charge you for diagnoses or you could consider it as to come-out and look at your air condition fees.  That how they make a living.

No one works for nothing, if a tech comes to check your system he is being paid this is not an estimate to install a new system for the sales dept. it is actual work and most times they can fix the problem while they are there, no one wants to come out to your house dianose the problem so you can try to fix it !
