If I use 89 octane, but my car calls for 91 octane, will this damage the engine?
It will be ok! if your engine doesnt ping under a load it will be ok. the timing has an auto adjustment to compensate.

But you won't get the best performance out of it. You are wasting the advantages of the higher compression of the engine.
