7 year old thinks school is boring

My son is 7 years old and just started 2nd grade.  Kindergarten and 1st grade were great because he was excited to go to school, but this year he was so upset when summer vacation ended.  When I mentioned how he used to love to go to school he just said not anymore...it's boring.  He's a really bright student and he gets along with everybody.  Any ideas on how I can keep him interested in school.  Thank you!Smile

Love is the battery of life....

Hi Shelly,
He reminds me myself..... I used to hate school.... I was always bored there..... That is probably due to the fact that he is very brilliant and is far ahead of the class (gets the idea in 5 minutes and the rest is [for him] just a repetition (and it is reakky boring).  You should do 2 things:
1.  Talk to the teacher, she'll find
ways and means to attend to
     it (special asignments ?).
2.  Send him, after school, to extra
     activities (such that will stimulate
     him).
3.  Buy him books and (science)
     movies that will stimulate him.
I have to warn you: it's not easy to raise a smart / gifted child....
Best regards,

P.S: Forgot to mention: I hated school but made my: B.Sc, M.Sc, Ph.D, and M.B.A.......
So don't worry about your son.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi Shelly,
I answered a lengthy answer and for some reason the system deleted it.... Ill try again: Your son reminds me myself.  I hated school, it was so boring..... The reason is simple: He is smart / gifted, gets the idea within 5 minutes and the rest is just a repetitions (and it's bore to death).   You can di 3 things:
1.  Talk to the teacher, he/she will
have to find ways and means
     to cope with it.
2.  Send him (after school) to extra
     activities that will stimulate his
     mind (science museum activities ?).
3.  Buy him book and movies (science)
     that will stimulate his mind.
Have to warn you: It's not easy to grow a gifted / smart child...
Best regards,

P.S: I hated school but made my: B.Sc, M.Sc, Ph.D, and M.B.A.  So don't worry about your son......

My wife and I will be home schooling our son. I suggest you pay a visit to the Nehemiah Institute on the internet and the Alliance for the Separation of School and State. This will give you some shocking backgrounds about the school system's being socialist from the very start to destroy children's potential to be the prominent individual they can be. Although, depending demographically what your community's values are, public schools are diliberately formed to be failures for our children. Education should never be compulsive and the child should never be robbed of inspiration. Please check out the two websites above and check around on the web for your state's homeschooling group. Try to make contact with some one and relate your issue with your son to them. Bless you. And, I do agree that your child is brilliant, but you as a parent must protect him from being dumbed down.

Life is like a Vapor, here then gone

You can swim all day in the sea of knowledge, and never get wet.

First talk with the teacher, and ask about his actions in the classroom. Perhaps hes just not being challenged enough. The teacher may have to put him on a special project, to make him feel that he is important, and the class needs him. There are school counslers that can talk with him, and you also. My daughter, hated school, never liked it, it was a battle, she just thought it was boring, and dumb. There are ways to get him out of this stage, but you all need to find the source of the problem first. It may the teacher,he doesnt feel comfortable with. Just be patient, and use all the sources out there to figure it out, he will improve. Good Luck.Smile

There may be many reasons for this. It may be the teacher, or someone that is bothering him. He may not be challenged enough. My child went through this also. I would have a talk with the teacher and she should try to put him on a special project, so he will feel important, and he will want to go everyday. He probably is not stimulated enough, and may need a counsler. Theres no way of knowing until you talk with your child and the adults that are with him all day. I am sure he will be ok, but I would rule everything out first... perhaps he finds it boring, and he may need to be moved to another class or higher grade. Just dig in and find out. Good Luck!!Smile

Health Expert consulting patients on various health issues like Hemroids , Skin Tags and making a way through disease free world.

It could be because of the amount of accountability teachers have to deal with everyday. I am a teacher, and the amount of testing the kids need, test prep itself takes over everything else, along with abiding by whatever rules and regulations the district requires, especially if you teach at a school that has low test scores or is on probation. FYI,I teach in the state of California. Not sure what the perspective is from other states. I would love to have the freedom to develop units and curriculum that will enrich and engage the student everyday. Also, money may be an issue. If the teacher has to pay out of her own pocket for extra things in order to implement a lesson, instead of having those things provided by the school or district, it can become a burden for the teacher.

Is it too easy?

If he gets bad grades, it might be too hard for him and he shows it by being angry, I myself am in highschool. Try checking his grades and ask his teacher how hes doing. If he's doing okay, ask him if he wants to do some sports, most boys love to play football, give that a try.
