I can't find five-spice powder in the grocery store. What is it?

Five spice powder is a mixture of several different spices, including cinnamon, cloves, fennel seeds, anise, and peppercorns. It is used mainly in Asian cooking. If you can't find it with the other spices in your grocery store, you might try your local Asian market.

Chinese 5 spice powder

Prep Time: 15 minutes Ingredients:
  • 1 tsp. ground Szechwan pepper
  • 1 tsp. ground star anise
  • 1-1/4 tsp. ground fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground white pepper
Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in small airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place.
