it is very common. this is the age where they really know who their "security blanket" is and when you're stepping back they see you're gone. your baby will be fine. if it's the case that you have to leave he/she to go to work or whatever and you leave them with someone you just have to leave and let them cry it out. and sooner or later they'll be fine. they'll learn. i've seen parents have to do this in daycare when i was little and as a nursery worker at my church. at first they don't like being left, but they eventually grow out of it. and they'll be fine. be strong and do what you have to do.
