3M vs Google

Which company encourage it workers to have more creative, 3M or Google? I know that both of them do it but which is more?

The answer is complexed: if you consider the percentage of employees that enjoy the freedom to spend part (15 %) of their working day engaged in projects and experiments that have no immediate commercial value to the firm then 

3M gives this right to every employee. But if you consider the percentage of time dedicated to that activity then Google offers its engineers the freedom to pursue products they are passionate about for no less than 20% of their  working time.

Both companies have quite a record at being creative. But an interesting exercise - check out the 3M products index, note just how many products they have, and how many of them you personally know of as good & innovative products that you are thankful for.

I did this, and I am awed.

So, maybe the proof is in the pudding, and maybe when Google is also 100 years old, we'll look at their portfolio (well, maybe not me personally :) and we'll be awed.
