Could Afghanistan Become Obama’s Vietnam?

President Obama had not even taken office before supporters were etching his likeness onto Mount Rushmore as another Abraham Lincoln or the second coming of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Yet what if they got the wrong predecessor? What if Mr. Obama is fated to be another Lyndon B. Johnson instead?

To be sure, such historical analogies are overly simplistic and fatally flawed, if only because each presidency is distinct in its own way. But the L.B.J. model — a president who aspired to reshape America at home while fighting a losing war abroad — is one that haunts Mr. Obama’s White House as it seeks to salvage Afghanistan while enacting an expansive domestic program.

In this summer of discontent for Mr. Obama, as the heady early days give way to the grinding battle for elusive goals, he looks ahead to an uncertain future not only for his legislative agenda but for what has indisputably become his war. Last week’s elections in Afghanistan played out at the same time as the debate over health care heated up in Washington, producing one of those split-screen moments that could not help but remind some of Mr. Johnson’s struggles to build a Great Society while fighting in Vietnam.

“The analogy of Lyndon Johnson suggests itself very profoundly,” said David M. Kennedy, the Stanford University historian. Mr. Obama, he said, must avoid letting Afghanistan shadow his presidency as Vietnam did Mr. Johnson’s. “He needs to worry about the outcome of that intervention and policy and how it could spill over into everything else he wants to accomplish.”

By several accounts, that risk weighs on Mr. Obama these days. Mr. Kennedy was among a group of historians who had dinner with Mr. Obama at the White House earlier this summer where the president expressed concern that Afghanistan could yet hijack his presidency. Although Mr. Kennedy said he could not discuss the off-the-record conversation, others in the room said Mr. Obama acknowledged the L.B.J. risk.

“He said he has a problem,” said one person who attended that dinner at the end of June, insisting on anonymity to share private discussions. “This is not just something he can turn his back on and walk away from. But it’s an issue he understands could be a danger to his administration.”

Truely knowing one is to become one.

Why is Afghanistan only/suddenly Obama's Vietnam as if he originally sent the troops in to fight. If anything the question should read,  Is Afghanistan America's next Vietnam(include Obama as well in the question if you want). In answer it depends on how you compare Afghanistan with Vietnam. If your talking in terms of the same amount of lives lost within the same time frame then I think not. It would take a big escalation in fighting ability by Afgan resistance for troops to return home in body bags in the same numbers as in Vietnam. Plus I think  once the Afghan current goverment is strong enough to preserve itself (Army/military wise) against any attempted over-throw, the U.S will withdraw all/most of its troops and instead provide arms-length support for Afghanistan's elected Governments.

Obama has more than his hands full dealing with so many issues at home and trying to make changes that are difficult to almost impossible at least as far as his desire for universal medical coverage. Add the worlld situation of Israel and especially Afghanistan and I wonder how he can think straight. He can however,  because he has a great mind, whether you agree with him or not he does have that going for him. The subjuect of concern is whether Afghanistan might be his

downfall and end up being the one thing he would be remembered for in the future. It is often true that it doesn't matter how many good things you do you tend to get remembered for the one big undesirable event you are reccorded as a

failure for not accomplishing. I believe this could be the case for Obama. We have majora problems there. We are losing more lives as we engage more  troops, but we have heard reports that we needs more troops still. That is the way it was in Viet Nam. It has been stated by a high military man that we are now lossng  the war and that we could to so I believe. I'm not absolutely sure on the latter coment.

I don't want to spread any false rummors. The enemy has built up troops and has befriended the local people so we don't always know who the enemy is--sound familiar? We have no invented any thing to discover those bombs implanted in the roads--why haven't we do that? The country is big and  mountionous and it is hard to get around in such territory. Many of the people like the Taliban and think of them as friends and us a prople who want to destroy their way of life of the way they make their income (from the poppy seeds-dope).

We offer them a new form of government that they wonder why they need since they have gotten along so far. Things aren't great and there are  things I's sure they would like to improve, but they are also scared of helping us. There are just so many things to overcome in that country that it seems almost impossible. I haven't mentioned the corruption in  the current goverment. This is probably Obama's biggest challenge of his presidency--bigger than the next biggest, universal health care.  He could fail on both points. I won't count him out yet.

Afghanistan deserves to be Obama's Vietnam if bush can be blamed for every one of Obama's shortcomings. No one wants to be responsible for losing a war and a large number of lives, but no one wants to keep hearing everything that's happened in his administration was because of or began with Bush. Who is responsible for his steady decline from the good grace of the Ameican people except his inexperience and poor judgement? No one wants to hear the same person toot their own horn so long untill he don't even get long winded anymore.Unless things change soon, we will be destined to circumstances that will leave a lot of things to be desired . That's when we can truly  say ''this was after Mr. Bush's time"

This will show you how backward this man is in some areas, he is actually worrying about this Hijacking his Presidency, does he really think that forcing us into communism won't do that anyway? Is anyone really planning on re electing this fool, to what, a new Kremlin?

He really should wake up and smell the coffee, didn't he say during one of his million campaign speeches that he was bringing the troops home? All I have seen him do so far is break his campaign promises, plunge us in to unpayable debt, force us into things no one wants, step all over the constitution and travel around the world with his family and their entourage and take vacations, where does he find the time?

Like what?  Stock market is up over 9500 from a low of 6500 or so, in just a few months.....housing market has improved for six straight months.....America's image in the world improved overnight....avoided a depression bigger than the Great Depression....health care is going to improve, no way to go but up, since now America ranks 37th in the world....and it's beginning to feel good to be an American once again....

I warned you people about that surly misfit!  Will Obama's flattery and hypocrisy win a war against a people that defeated the Soviet Union?

Already forgotten why American went into Afghanistan?  Conveniently, forgotten?  bin Laden, still at large.  Omar still at large.....however, I don't think Obama is going to stay in Afghanistan, since it is not a threat to our security.  At least, not an army necessary to keep the hunt up for bin Laden......which is the only reason to be there.

The war was turning things around in Afghanistan, until Obama blew it out his butt!

What a joker you seem to be.

He blew it in Iraq too, and hates the people who died on 9-11!

A rather sick kind of joker.

by Will Brinson Filed under: Blogs , Sports Media , Current Events Marv Albert and 50 Cent had a reported "interaction" backstage at Jimmy Kimmel Live that generated a ton of press -- obviously whenever two people like Marv and Fitty interact in a (and this is important) reportedly violent manner, it's gonna be news. McCoy Drums Up Victory for Longhorns

by Terrance Harris Filed under: Kansas , Texas , BCS , Big 12 AUSTIN, Texas -- Usually one the most straight-laced and reserved of the Texas Longhorns , senior quarterback Colt McCoy finally stopped to take it all in late Saturday night. Moments after the second-ranked Longhorns defeated Kansas 51-20 to earn a trip to the Big 12 Championship Game as the South division champs, and after McCoy cemented himself as college football's all-time winningest quarterback, thefour-year starter celebrated with record 101,357 fans who stuck around Texas Memorial Stadium to pay homage. McCoy jumped into the mode of a normal student overflowing with spirit as he fired off the cannon and then beat storied base drum Big Bertha as the crowd roared even louder.McCoy Drums Up Victory for Longhorns originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Sun, 22 Nov 2009 01:32:00 EST . Ducks Bump Wildcats in Game of the Year...

by Brian Grummell Filed under: Arizona , Oregon , Pac 10 , General CFB Insanity It was arguably the game of the year in college football. It was certainly further evidence that the Pac-10 is back as a national conference. After two overtimes and a touchdown with six seconds left in regulation, the Oregon Ducks outlasted Arizona 44-41 to take control of the Pac-10. For a while, the stars seemed to align for Arizona. California upset Stanford during the the third quarter of the Wildcats' game, bumping one Pac-10 peer from Rose Bowl contention. Meanwhile, Arizona shrugged off a 14-0 deficit to take a 24-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. However, Oregon then rallied with 17 points in the final frame, including a highlight-worthy touchdown pass from Jeremiah Masoli to Ed Dickson with six seconds left that deflated the home crowd and dispersed the students, who had emerged nearby to storm the field.Ducks Bump Wildcats in Game of the Year Candidate originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Sun, 22 Nov 2009 00:49:00 EST . McCoy Keeps Longhorns on Title March

by Terrance Harris Filed under: Kansas , Texas , BCS , Big 12 AUSTIN, Texas -- For 21 University of Texas seniors, Saturday night was their last time playing at Texas Memorial Stadium. So they made it a night to remember. The second-ranked Longhorns overpowered Kansas en route to a 51-20 victory that cemented them as the Big 12 South division champions and sealed senior quarterback Colt McCoy 's place as college football's all-time winningest quarterback with 43 career wins. But the Texas Longhorns , who are well positioned for their first BCS national championship game bid since 2005, still have quite a bit of business to finish. They will have to get past rival Texas A&M on Thanksgiving night and then North division champ Nebraska in the Big 12 title game.McCoy Keeps Longhorns on Title March originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Sat, 21 Nov 2009 23:04:00 EST . Stanford Passes on Victory Over Cal

by Michelle Smith Filed under: California , Stanford , Pac 10 STANFORD, Calif. -- Jim Harbaugh talked a little bit about hubris early this week, the danger of thinking you are more than you are. Did Stanford think that putting up 106 points in consecutive upset victories over Oregon and USC would guarantee another flurry of points and touchdown celebrations? Did they think that being ranked nationally and favored in the 112th Big Game - unheard of occurrences since Tyrone Willingham left The Farm for Notre Dame after the 2001 season - gave them an advantage against California 's Bears? by FanHouse Newswire Filed under: WBA , WBC , IBF , HBO , Showtime KIEL, Germany (AP) -- Zsolt Erdei of Hungary won the WBC cruiserweight title with a majority decision over Giacobbe Fragomeni on Saturday night. Erdei vacated the WBO light-heavyweight title to fight at cruiserweight for the first time, and managed to do just enough against the 40-year-old Italian. Two judges had it 115-113 for Erdei, while the third scored it 114-114. Erdei (31-0) controlled the first three rounds with his speed, landing several powerful rights to Fragomeni's head. Hapless on the Hudson: Nets, Knicks and...

by Lisa Olson Filed under: NBA EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Desperation oozed from every pore. If New York-area basketball hasn't reached its nadir, it's only because the NBA has a silly rule that some team must win. Otherwise, who knows how low this charade might go? The players might be the ones slipping paper bags over their heads, to match the fans' embarrassment as they sit in the stands and try not to rubberneck. Though plenty of empty seats were available, more than the usual few gluttons for punishment showed up at the Izod Center Saturday afternoon, hoping to see ... what? New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank fired after the first quarter? New York Knicks owner James Dolan do an about-face and sign Allen Iverson to a multi-year deal? The teams set a combined record for most horrendous shooting in four quarters? Dora the Explorer, the day's big draw, dunk over Nate Robinson ? The possibilities really were endless. As it was, the Nets dropped to 0-13 and continued to careen dangerously toward matching the league record of 17 straight losses to open a season. The Knicks, by virtue of their 98-91 victory, actually won consecutive games to improve to 3-9, and can now turn their focus back on the real goal: convincing LeBron James , or any big free agent to-be, that the cesspool really isn't as nasty as it currently looks. The Supporters Sing, MLS Listens

by Brian Straus Filed under: MLS SEATTLE -- It's common knowledge that soccer fans are a bit of a different breed. They care less about comfort and more about spectacle. The sight of a whole section of supporters singing, waiving enormous flags and lighting flares would be shocking at Yankee Stadium or Heinz Field, yet it's expected at soccer venues around the world and is becoming relatively common in MLS . That passion also affects change -- executives know it's not a good idea to upset these people. More so than any other American sports league, MLS has embraced that relationship. While fans elsewhere struggle with nonsense like the BCS, personal seat licenses and Daniel Snyder, MLS supporters have driven the league's evolution (speaking out against gimmicks like the shootout), have worked directly with clubs on ticketing and marketing and enjoy an annual audience with the commissioner that is unimaginable in any other league. The Supporters Sing, MLS Listens originally appeared on Fanhouse Soccer Blog on Sat, 21 Nov 2009 15:35:00 EST . Longhorns Find It Easy to Stay Focused

by Terrance Harris Filed under: Kansas , Texas , Big 12 AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas coach Mack Brown usually doesn't like to live in the past, but this week he broke out some old film for his team. He showed the Longhorns how teams from 2006 and 2007 finished in comparison to 2005, when Texas won the BCS national title, and last season when many agree the 12-1 Longhorns should have been given the opportunity to compete for the national championship. Brown's point to his second-ranked,10-0 squad is simple: stay focused these last two regular-season games, the Big 12 championship game in two weeks, and then biggest of prizes await the Texas Longhorns in Pasadena.
