The first thing you need to do here is accept 2012 for what it is, a movie. Hollywood has always used perceptions of the future as fodder for their sensationalistic productions. All things are open to interpretation by everyone and not everyone can be correct all of the time. The Mayan calendar does indeed seem to wind down to its ending on Dec. 21 2012, but that in no way really indicates global disaster. The Mayans were no different than us in most ways, they could no more see the future than you or I can.
It's true that our world will end someday, but not in the way depicted in the movie. A more likely cause would be from a large meteor, a rogue black hole (yes, they do exist), mutual nuclear destruction, or, should we be spared any of these disasters, our sun will eventually swell into a red giant with a diameter that includes Earth's orbit before it collapses into a neutron star. None of these things are likely to happen in our near future, or even in our great great grand-children's time, but it will happen eventually. (like perhaps about the time I'm enjoying my ten millionth reincarnation)
