2001 Chevy Blazer blowing cold then hot

I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer. The AC will initially blow cold and then gets hot. It takes about 15-20 minutes to go from cold to hot. The odd part is that if I turn off the engine for about 10-12 hours, the AC will blow cold again for 15-20 min. This is a repetitive cycle. My local shop suggested I replace the entire unit at a cost of $1200. Needless to say I don't want to do that. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Can't really answer but my '02 GMC did the same thing. 3 compresors later it acts like it's low on freeon and then quits. I think they are both GM problems they don't want to back up. To replace the compressor with a different brand is what the parts store told me. He had the same problem with an '03.
