1 lamp with 2 light sockets

I have an old lamp in which the cord needs to be replaced. Your advice is not as simple as it seems since this lamp has 2 sockets for bulbs. With only one cord how do I wire 2 sockets?

In parallel.  Both sockets connect to the hot wire the same way, and to the neutral/return wire the same way.  It doesn't matter how may sockets you have to connect, they would all connect the same way to the same spot (even using extra wire to reach sockets set further away, as in a chandelier).

I don't want to sound so novice but, I assume that the one cord that's split in two will not be able to cover both light sockets. So what else will I need to accomplish this task?

Some extra strands of wire.  Both of the wires of the cord should branch into a "Y" going to each socket.  I don't know how much room you have for the Y connections.  They could be made with wire nuts, or soldered and taped, or just twisted together and taped.
