I have a 1991 BMW 525i. The front latching mechanism is broken.
The cable is attached and pulls normally from the driver's positioin with the lever, located on the left sidewall of the driver's position, but when I pull the lever the cable does not pull the latching mechanism up in the front of the engine enough to free the hood.
Does anybody know how to get in there to open the hood, from the front area of the car? I have looked closely and see no way to get to it without cutting a hole in the hood, over the latch.
I knew is was going bad and I fixed it by jamming a nut and superglueing it in place, up against the mechanism, and it worked fine for months. But my mechanic saw it when it was being smogged and thought it was just a loose nut and forced it out of position and then closed the hood. (GREAT ! !)
I can't believe that BMW would not build a way to bypass that latch if it malfunctions like this. To make their design idea even worse, as I remember it's partly plastic too. Any help would be appreciated.
