I grew up in the 50's. We use to have a red clear pudding mix, that tasted like rasberries, or much like Swedish Fish. I do not recall the brand name, and I am sure it is no longer available in stores, yet I found a web site that sells vintage brand names. Does anyone know what brand this was and the name of the red clear pudding?
I found the answer to the 1950's red clear pudding question. It is also still available. It is Junket Danish Dessert (Raspberry). You can order it at www.junketdesserts.com . It is also available in Strawberry, but the one that was so memorable for me was the Raspberry. Even Sara (last name I forget) from the Food Network calls for the Raspberry Danish Dessert as a glaze to put with her sliced strawberry pie noting that the strawberry glaze with the strawberries is less complimentary than the Raspberry version(maybe just too much strawberry). Apparently some stores still carry this product, but not in my area. In fact Junket has an August special available now, where you can even get some boxes free. That was a nice surprise to find when I ordered. Whether you have this alone (as a clear raspberry pudding, or put it in your pie, or over pound cake... it is definitely a winner.
I'd just like to add that if anyone is looking for a wonderfully amazing sugar substitute, check out www.WheyLow.com . You will be able to put this in your sugar bowl and no one in the family will be able to tell the difference. Their products have about 1/5 of the calories and glycemic index compared to sugar. They have a version of maple, ice cream, gold (brown sugar), and WheyLow-D that is even less glycemic value that is especially for diabetics. It measures cup for cup as a replacement for sugar, works the same as sugar does in recipes, is healthier for all members of the family, and even is converts any undigested amount remaining into a prebiotic in your stomach. I have a whole new lease on life as I now feel I can do a little baking, and not be damaged by the nasty effects of sugar. My whole outlook on diabetes has turned to a positive direction. This tip may be a life saver for many you may know, or even a way to offer healthier treats for your kids without the effects of sugar. Now if I can just get Junket to make a Whey Low version of their Danish Dessert, I will be in raspberry heaven. And yes.... I did suggest it for their suggestions department, and test kitchen. One can only hope. Meanwhile I will cut the amount of sugar in each half cup serving of Danish Dessert by adding several sliced strawberries thereby cutting down on some of the sugar based Danish Dessert per serving. : )
