Side Effects of Prosac

My 14 1/2 year old son has been on Prosac for a year and a half. Since the time he was on it, this former straight A student has been getting increasingly bad grades and says he is unable to focus.

As I don't believe one just develops A.D.D. at age 13 out of nowhere, I'm guessing that either the marital breakup of his parents, the major cause of his depression, or the medication is causing the learning "problems." Now, as the divorce is over and the home situation is better, the only area left for which I can attribute causality other than puberty and hormones is the medication. He also says he is ready to stop taking Prozac. I can find nothing about focus problems in the Prosac literature. Please advise.  Can Prozac cause fogginess or focus problems in a child this age?

Is the doctor who prescribed the Prozac a psychiatrist? If so, please consult him.

If not please, please refer to a psychiatrist.

Screw 'em if they can't take a joke

It could be that the prozac is not working any longer and he may be in need of something different. The lack of focus was the first symptom I saw with my (also straight AB) daughter showed when she became depressed.  You know the expectation is always that when the stressor is over we should be immediately better and able to carry on like we did before. Unfortunately, there is so much residual after you have been emotionally held out over the edge. I am sure the situation settling down is a huge relief but I am sure that there is still sadness in his heart that his old family is no longer intact. I put my daughter in counseling before she was ever put on antidepressants (for the same reason your son was) and am not sure how long it will take until she no longer needs the meds. but I am pretty sure it will be long after the divorce is behind us. You need time to get over that and it is different for each person. Remember that while we can find another mate, he will not have another father. He will only have the one that is not there with him and he will be reminded of that in so many subtle ways in school every day. Please don't make the same mistake I did and try to do without the meds as it takes a couple of weeks to get into the system. This being high school all of those grades can have a real impact on his future. Remember also to take care of yourself.  Take care and God Bless you.
