1000% vice president politics. History question. I think in the 70's a presidential candidate said he was behind his Vice presidential candidate 1000%. A short time later he was picking a new candidate.
In 1972 George McGovern was the Democratic Presidential nominee. His Vice-Presidential Candidate was Thomas Eagleton. It was learned that Mr. Eagleton had spent some time in a mental hospital. Mr. McGovern stated that he had 1000% confidence in Mr. Eagleton. He was later replaced by Sargeant Shriver on the ticket. The McGovern - Shriver ticket was defeated by Nixon - Agnew.
Sounds like George McGovern in 1972. He had picked Sen Tom Eagleton from Mo. as VP running mate. It was soon discovered that Eagleton had had serious bouts of depression, requiring electric shock therapy. The shocked Democrats had Mc Govern issue his 1000% statement. When polls showed Eagleton in overwhelming disfavor, he withdrew. Sargent Shriver took his place on the ticket. Only Mass. voted democratic in this debacle. But, Watergate soon came to light.
