In a 100-meter dash, how long (or how far?) does it take the runners to reach maximum speed?
This is a very interesting question!
I took the data from this site and calculated them with Excel:
http://www.rose-hulman.edu/Class/CalculusProbs/Problems/RUNOUT/RUNOUT.asc
It seems that Carl Lewis reached his maximum speed after 50 meters and kept the same speed till the end. Ben Johnson reached his maximum speed after 60 meters but did not keep the same speed till the end
Ben Johnson
distance total time time per 10 meters
10 1.84 1.84
20 2.86 1.02
30 3.8 0.94
40 4.67 0.87
50 5.53 0.86
60 6.38 0.85
70 7.23 0.85
80 8.1 0.87
90 8.96 0.86
100 9.83 0.87
Thanks! An excellent, speedy answer!
I would have said after the runner reached the 50 meters mark. As I see I would have been right.
I thought so, because after 50 meters the runner runs straight.
