no reason, it is just where history led it from the vihuela and lute. there are 7 string guitars pretty common these days, 12 strings, which are double 6, and i myself invented a unique tuning for a 9 ...

that's way heavy for that guitar, it might explode. the truss rod was not made for that kid of tension. but if you must, i would put as many springs as possible in the back. you may have other ...
